Genetic Engineering!

Big Ideas From Today:

  • What is recombinant DNA?
  • How do we use bacteria to harvest human insulin?
  • Why do we use bacteria?

Your test tomorrow includes the following topics:

  • Structure of DNA
  • DNA Replication
  • RNA vs. DNA
  • Protein Synthesis
  • Mutations
  • Genetic Engineering

Tonight’s HW:

1) Study your returned quizzes, labs, notes, and your review guide for tomorrow’s test.

2) Finish the review guide.

Sex-Linked Inheritance

Think about all of the modes of inheritance we have studied so far:

  1. Complete Dominance
  2. Incomplete Dominance
  3. Multiple Alleles and Codominance
  4. Sex Determination
  5. and now……….Sex-Linked Inheritance

You’ve learned alot about genetics in the past 2 weeks!!!!  In order to prepare for your test on Tuesday, test yourself on each of the topics.  What do you know about each?  What human examples exist for each? How is each pattern of inheritance different from the others?

And now……………..figure out this pedigree puzzle!

Sex-Linked Inheritance

Click Here to Take the Colorblindness Screening Test!

Big Ideas From Today:

  • What are sex-linked traits?
  • What is a carrier?
  • Why are there more colorblind men than women?
  • Why can only women be carriers and not men?

Tonight’s HW: Read the Lab and complete the 3 Pre-Lab Questions

Multiple Alleles

Your Role: You are a forensic investigator compiling evidence in response to a report of a possible Baby Switch at the local hospital.

Use all of the tools that you have learned about Multiple Alleles and how blood type is inherited to help gather evidence in addition to regular DNA testing to support or disprove the claim that these babies were switched.

Check out this real life story:

And of course, the dramatic completely untrue version:

Big Ideas From Today:

  • What is multiple allele inheritance?
  • What are the human blood types?
  • What is different about blood types?
  • How can we use our knowledge about inheritance for problem solving?

Tonight’s HW: HW #2
